Is JB Weld food safe?

In our daily life, it’s quite natural to break stuff, and repairing is likely the go-to solution. And whether you’re doing a small repair or a big one, you would want for it to be decent enough as it did prior to it being broken.

While repairing or welding products that have contact with food, be careful with choosing products and make sure they are safe for use. Also, you have to check that welding materials are food grade or not. Whether they contain harmful ingredients, or if they are heated, if they are not waterproof and release toxic chemicals, don’t use them.

Today I will tell you whether J-B Weld food is safe or if it is FDA approved or not. So, before using J-B Weld in any product which has contact with foods, read this article and then think whether you should use it or not.

Is JB Weld food safe?

J-B Weld is non-toxic when it is fully cured. It is water-resistant and acid-resistant. And when hardened, it is petroleum/chemical-resistant. Also, for 10 minutes, the maximum temperature threshold it can withstand is approximately 600 °F (316 °C).

And the constant temperature of withstanding is 500 °F (260 °C). So, if you want, you can use it in food contact materials, but of course, this is not entirely safe because it contains BPA, so you shouldn’t use it. For this, we recommend not using the product.

Is JB Weld FDA approved?

J-B Weld isn’t FDA approved. J-B Weld contains BPA; although a lot of people still consider BPA as food-safe, the main thing is: it is not food-safe. After being cured, J-B Weld is pretty much BPA with a bit of iron. “The authorization of Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of the U.S. has ended the use of BPA in infant formula packaging and baby bottles based on not safety and market abandonment. And also, BPA used baby bottles are banned from the Canada and European Union.”

Also, where there is always some heat, BPA can release and can degrade the bond. So, choosing J-B Weld as a food-safe is not a good idea because the FDA still did not prove J-B Weld as a food-grade weld.

Can you use JB Weld in an oven?

Yes, for the microwave oven, you can use J-B Weld because instead of infrared radiation (heat), the J-B Weld is exposed to microwave radiation. It has a great temperature range, and after being cured, it is water-resistant, so it is less risky than other BPA-based products.

And if you want to repair the knife or other stuff which isn’t in direct contact with food, then you can use J-B Weld; there isn’t any inappropriate or bad news for a bit of use.

Is JB Weld toxic when heated

When heated, J-B Weld is toxic, and it can create a bad odor, but when it is fully cured, it doesn’t provide any odor smell, or it is also non-toxic. If you want to clean the surface of the products which were repaired with J-B Weld, please don’t use any alcohol there because it can degrade the bond.

JB weld also resists vibration, shock, and extreme temperature fluctuations.

Where can you use JB Weld as food safe?

You can use it where food isn’t directly in contact with the part of a product, like a spoon, handle, knife handle, inside the microwave oven, etc.

Final thoughts

In summary, J-B Weld is not food safe. Though you can use it, what’s important to remember is you should not use J-B Weld on products you use with food. Because in it are BPA and Iron which are not great for consumption.

Finally, choose a food-grade epoxy or glue which is not toxic, and FDA approved for your products that have direct contact with food.
